Neuroleva Education

Nervous System Health

Understand how the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves communicate, coordinate the body, and support daily function. This hub is educational and is separate from Neuroleva product information.

Brain, spinal cord, and branching peripheral nerve pathways illustrated as one connected communication network
The brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves work together as an interconnected communication network.

The communication network

What is the nervous system?

The nervous system includes the brain, spinal cord, and nerves throughout the body. It receives information, processes it, and sends signals that help coordinate thought, sensation, movement, behaviour, and many automatic body functions.

Its cells communicate through complex electrical and chemical signals. Different structures have specialised roles, but they work as an interconnected system rather than as isolated parts.

Two connected divisions

Central and peripheral nervous systems

Central nervous system

The brain and spinal cord form the central nervous system. They process information, coordinate responses, and connect activity across the body.

Peripheral nervous system

The peripheral nervous system includes nerves outside the brain and spinal cord. It carries sensory information inward and motor or automatic signals outward.

What the nervous system does

Its functions overlap and depend on continuous communication among the brain, spinal cord, sensory organs, peripheral nerves, muscles, and internal organs.

Movement

The brain, spinal cord, and nerves coordinate voluntary movement, posture, reflexes, and muscle control.

Sensation

Sensory pathways carry information about touch, temperature, pain, body position, sight, sound, smell, and taste.

Learning and memory

Networks in the brain help people learn, store information, retrieve memories, and adapt to experience.

Sleep

The nervous system helps regulate sleep timing, sleep stages, alertness, and the transition between sleep and wakefulness.

Autonomic functions

Automatic pathways help regulate functions such as heart rate, breathing, digestion, sweating, and blood pressure.

Stress responses

The brain and autonomic nervous system coordinate physical and behavioural responses to challenge or perceived threat.

Coordination

Multiple brain regions and sensory systems work together to support balance, timing, precision, and coordinated activity.

Supportive daily context

Everyday nervous-system health

General health habits can support overall wellbeing and normal nervous-system function. These include regular sleep, suitable physical activity, a balanced eating pattern, social connection, stress-management practices, and avoiding tobacco and harmful substance use.

Individual needs differ. New, persistent, worsening, or unexplained symptoms should be discussed with a qualified healthcare professional. Everyday habits do not diagnose, treat, or guarantee prevention of neurological conditions.
