ADHD: Understanding Attention, Hyperactivity, Impulsivity, and Daily Life
Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder involving persistent patterns of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity that can interfere with functioning across daily settings.

Core explanation
What is ADHD?
ADHD is not simply being energetic, occasionally distracted, or poorly motivated. Clinicians consider the persistence of symptoms, their presence across more than one setting, developmental expectations, and whether they meaningfully interfere with social, educational, or occupational functioning.
The three core areas are inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsivity. A person may have predominantly inattentive symptoms, predominantly hyperactive-impulsive symptoms, or a combined presentation. Presentation can change over time.
Beyond the stereotype
ADHD across life and everyday function
ADHD can affect children, teenagers, and adults. The visible pattern may shift as environments and responsibilities change. Executive functions—including working memory, inhibition, planning, task initiation, organization, time management, and completion—may be affected, but executive difficulties are not unique to ADHD.
Daily impact may appear at school, work, home, in sleep routines, relationships, emotional regulation, and family life. Strengths, challenges, co-occurring conditions, and support needs differ between individuals.
Clinical care
How ADHD is assessed and managed
ADHD diagnosis is clinical. Evaluation may include developmental, medical, educational, and mental health history; symptom and impairment review; information from multiple settings; standardized rating scales; and consideration of other explanations. No single standalone test or online score diagnoses ADHD. Neuroleva does not diagnose ADHD.
Treatment may include medication, behavioral interventions, psychological support, parent training, educational or workplace support, practical structure, and ongoing monitoring. Decisions should be individualized with qualified healthcare professionals.
