ADHD Symptoms: Inattention, Hyperactivity, and Impulsivity
ADHD symptoms are considered as persistent patterns—not isolated moments of distraction, activity, or impulsive behaviour—and are evaluated in the context of age, settings, and daily functioning.

Understanding the topic
The three symptom domains
ADHD is associated with ongoing patterns of inattention and/or hyperactivity-impulsivity. Everyone can be distracted, restless, or impulsive sometimes; ADHD involves a pattern that is more frequent, persistent, and impairing than expected for the person’s developmental stage.
- Inattention can involve difficulty sustaining attention, organizing tasks, following through, or remembering everyday responsibilities.
- Hyperactivity can involve visible movement, difficulty remaining seated, excessive talking, or an internal sense of restlessness.
- Impulsivity can involve acting or speaking before considering consequences, interrupting, or difficulty waiting.
Everyday context
Why context matters
For clinical diagnosis, symptoms are not judged from a single situation. They are considered across more than one setting—such as home, education, work, or relationships—and in relation to meaningful functional impairment.
Symptom expression can change with age. Visible hyperactivity may become less prominent while restlessness, time-management difficulty, or organizational strain remains.
Assessment and support
Professional assessment
Normal distractibility is not equivalent to ADHD. Sleep problems, anxiety, depression, learning difficulties, medical conditions, and other factors can create overlapping symptoms. A qualified healthcare professional can conduct a comprehensive assessment.
