ADHD Diagnosis and Assessment
ADHD diagnosis is clinical. No single questionnaire, brain scan, laboratory test, or online quiz can diagnose ADHD by itself.

Understanding the topic
What an evaluation may involve
A comprehensive evaluation considers whether symptoms are persistent, began during development, occur in more than one setting, and interfere with social, educational, or occupational functioning.
- medical, developmental, and mental health history
- current and childhood symptom history
- functional impairment
- information from multiple settings where applicable
- standardized rating scales as supporting tools
- assessment of learning and cognitive strengths or difficulties when relevant
- review of medicines, sleep, and health factors
Everyday context
Differential diagnosis
Sleep disorders, anxiety, depression, trauma, substance use, learning difficulties, autism, tic disorders, mood disorders, and medical conditions can overlap with or coexist with ADHD. Rating scales can organize information but do not diagnose on their own.
Assessment and support
Qualified professional assessment
Neuroleva does not diagnose ADHD. If symptoms are persistent and impairing, a qualified healthcare professional can determine what assessment is appropriate and discuss the findings in context.
