Predominantly Inattentive Presentation

In this ADHD presentation, clinically meaningful inattentive symptoms are more prominent than hyperactive-impulsive symptoms during the current assessment period.

Inattention may be less outwardly visible while still affecting organization, memory, and task completion.

Understanding the topic

How inattention may appear

Inattention is not a lack of intelligence or effort. It may affect the ability to regulate attention consistently, especially during lengthy, repetitive, or multi-step activities.

  • difficulty sustaining attention
  • distractibility and forgetfulness
  • losing items needed for tasks
  • difficulty organizing or sequencing work
  • trouble following multi-step instructions
  • delayed task initiation or incomplete tasks
  • difficulty estimating and managing time

Everyday context

Why it may be overlooked

This presentation may attract less attention because the person may not be visibly disruptive. Children may appear quiet, dreamy, or inconsistent; adults may compensate with extensive reminders, extra time, or last-minute effort.

Presentation can change over time and should not be treated as a fixed personality type.

Assessment and support

Evaluation and support

Assessment considers developmental history, symptoms across settings, functional impact, and other possible explanations. Helpful supports may include clearer task structure, external reminders, organizational systems, and individualized clinical or educational care.
